Located in Marmanhac, 15 km from Aurillac, Château de La Voulte is a fortress in Haute-Auvergne distinguished by its exceptional continuity. The owner-led tour takes you through eight centuries of history.

Château de La Voulte is a fortress in the Haute-Auvergne region with an exceptionally long history. Situated on a strategic site overlooking the Authre river, the castle has been known since the Middle Ages and was rebuilt in the 15th century on older structures, without any break in function or use. Throughout the centuries, La Voulte remained a place where authority - military, administrative and judicial - was exercised in the service of legitimate power. This stability, which is rare in the region, explains the preservation of the site through the great crises of history, from the Hundred Years' War to the Wars of Religion, and then to the Revolution. With its sober architecture, adapted defensive systems and measured transformations, the château retains the coherence of a fortress designed to last and adapt rather than for show. The transition from feudal castle to armed fortress, then to noble residence, and finally to holiday home with gardens and gushing fountains, can be seen in the stonework, with great architectural continuity. You can see how a royal fortress functioned at the end of the Wars of Religion, and travel through eight centuries of history in the company of Crusader knights, the bailiff of Haute-Auvergne, captains and governors of strongholds, the King's counsellors, chamberlains and gentlemen of his chamber, seneschals and governors of Rouergue, royal officers, deputies to the Estates General of 1789, all loyal to the King and all lords of La Voulte. You will discover the renovations carried out in the 1920s by Frédéric François-Marsal, Senator for Cantal, Minister of Finance and President of the Council, who even briefly acted as President of the Republic in 1924. Still lived in and maintained, the Château de La Voulte is now open to the public from time to time, with guided tours focusing on the history, functions and institutional permanence of the site.
